Briefly describe your favorite memory playing or watching it.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span> My favorite sport growing up was, and still is, <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">basketball.<\/span>\u00a0 I was privileged to play basketball in high school but my favorite memories came as a spectator and an observer of the sport in general.\u00a0 I have many favorite memories including my high school basketball team coming from 16 points down in the fourth quarter to win the state championship and my college (Old Dominion University) winning a Division II National Championship (1975).\u00a0 But each year when the NCAA Men\u2019s Basketball Championship begins I often get two or three new favorite moments on the first day but none as personal and special as the two mentioned above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">Where is your favorite place around town to get a bite to eat? <\/span><\/strong>My schedule does not permit me much time to enjoy the finer eateries in Fredericksburg but my restaurant of choice in Richmond is Deep Run Roadhouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">If you could pick one super power to have, what would it be and why? <\/span><\/strong>I do not know if Marvel or DC have ever come up with this one but I would like to have the ability to read and retain information at <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">lightning speed<\/span> and to be able to organize and share that knowledge effectively and efficiently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why? <\/span><\/strong>Football, because it requires both brute strength and an in depth knowledge of strategy in motion.\u00a0 And let\u2019s not forget about tailgating!<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">If you were a Head Coach and could pick three words to motivate your team and hang in their locker room which words would you choose? <\/span><\/strong>To borrow from Bill Russell\u2019s (former Boston Celtic great) description of Red Auerback as a coach: \u201cHis methods were <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">thoughtful<\/span>, <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">innovative<\/span>, and <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">fluid<\/span>, and always geared to <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">the team over any one player<\/span>. Yet he found ways to inspire trust and confidence in each of us separately. He could talk to a player two or three times and he would know how to talk to him from then on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\">Each coach must be their own person with their own style but the three words I would chose to motivate a team (from Russell\u2019s description of Auerback) would be for them to be \u201c<span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">thoughtful<\/span>, <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">innovative<\/span>, and <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">fluid\u201d<\/span> with the caveat that it was <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">\u201calways the team over any one player.\u201d<\/span> In my view, this applies to most successful organizational settings.\u00a0 Anyone purporting to be a leader who does not inspire teamwork is not a leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">What does a<\/span> <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">great leader look like to you? <\/span><\/strong>Leaders come in all shapes and sizes and \u201cgreatness\u201d is often determined by an individual\u2019s reaction to circumstance. Greatness in a leader, in my view, goes back to the three words noted above:\u00a0 \u201c<span class=\"Normal__Char\">thoughtful<\/span>, <span class=\"Normal__Char\">innovative<\/span>, and <span class=\"Normal__Char\">fluid\u201d<\/span> with the caveat that it was <span class=\"Normal__Char\">\u201calways the team over any one player.\u201d<\/span> Most importantly, it is the team over the leader because successful leadership is more often than not selfless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">What is a must read for UMW Student-Athletes? <\/span><\/strong>I would recommend several books for student athletes (as well as all other students) to read:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">a.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cRed and Me: My Coach and Lifelong Friend\u201d by Bill Russell;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">b.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cSecond Wind\u201d by Bill Russell and Taylor Branch<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">c.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cMy Losing Season\u201d by Pat Conroy<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cLet Me Tell You A Story\u201d by John Feinstein and Red Auerbach<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">e.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cWhen The Game Was Ours\u201d by Larry Bird and Earvin \u201cMagic\u201d Johnson with Jackie MacMullan<\/p>\n<p class=\"Normal\">f.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe Innovators\u201d by Walter Isaacson<\/p>\n<p class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201\"><strong><span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">What is the best advice you have ever heard given to a college graduate? <\/span><\/strong>Dr. Marcia Brand, Executive Director of NIIOH, said this in her 2015 commencement address at ODU: <span class=\"Colorful_0020List_0020_002d_0020Accent_00201__Char\">\u201cBe kind to each other in the workplace.\u00a0 It is important to be a trusted, respectful, and supportive colleague.
