{"id":123417,"date":"2016-05-03T09:15:46","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T13:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/?p=19239"},"modified":"2016-05-03T09:15:46","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T13:15:46","slug":"recycled-cycles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/2016\/05\/03\/recycled-cycles\/","title":{"rendered":"Recycled Cycles"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p>They take their degrees and their dreams with them, but Mary Washington grads leave some things behind &ndash; beloved professors, fond memories, and bikes.<\/p><p>Each year, from Jepson to Combs, abandoned two-wheelers get tossed in the trash. UMW Chair of Art and Art History Carole Garmon is working to change that. This past winter, she and a dozen students wrapped their imaginations and talents around the cast-aside rides, turning them into shareable showpieces.<\/p><p>&ldquo;Our world has become so serious,&rdquo; said Garmon, whose plan was to decorate the bikes to reflect Mary Washington majors and halls, and introduce them back to the community. &ldquo;We wanted to do something to make people smile.&rdquo;<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/2016\/05\/03\/recycled-cycles\/photographer-97\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/greatminds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/20\/2016\/05\/Bike-art-5-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"Students painting and decorating bikes in the sculpture studio, Wednesday Dec. 2, 2015. Plastic combs laced through spokes give a nod to Combs Hall. A faux flower-wrapped frame with a nesting bird perched on the handlebars pays tribute to science and nature. A bike draped in dollars represents the College of Business.<\/p><p>&ldquo;It was interesting to see the different surprised reactions,&rdquo; said senior Michelle Pierson. &ldquo;We gave those bikes color again.&rdquo;<\/p><p>Garmon and her crew hope the moveable masterpieces go to anyone who needs them, spreading goodwill and lightheartedness across campus and into the Fredericksburg community.<\/p><p>The project &ndash; the service component of Garmon&rsquo;s senior capstone class Professional Practices in Studio Art &ndash; got rolling last year. Rescued bikes had to be cleaned and inspected before getting dolled up.
