{"id":129158,"date":"2017-09-06T09:21:05","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T13:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/umweagleeye.wpengine.com\/?p=129158"},"modified":"2017-09-14T13:24:42","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T17:24:42","slug":"sac-news-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/2017\/09\/06\/sac-news-30\/","title":{"rendered":"SAC News"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p><strong>Larry Atkins Award Nominations now Open &ndash;&nbsp;<\/strong>The SAC has opened nominations for the 2017 Larry Atkins Award.&nbsp; S.A.C.&rsquo;s Larry Atkins Award recognizes UMW employees who are the unsung heroes of our offices.&nbsp; Employees can be honored by their teammates and co-workers with this award, and they&rsquo;ll receive $100.<\/p><p>The S.A.C. chooses one wage, one classified, and one administrative professional faculty employee for the award.&nbsp; Nominees lend a helping hand to their teammates, go above and beyond in each and every task while wearing a smile, and set a positive example for others.<\/p><p>You&rsquo;ll find more information on the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/adminfinance.umw.edu\/hr\/employee-relations\/employee-recognition\/university-recognition-awards\/s-a-c-s-larry-atkins-award\/larrty-atkins-award-form\/\">Larry Atkins<\/a>&nbsp;page on the UMW website. &nbsp;To nominate a colleague, complete&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/adminfinance.umw.edu\/hr\/employee-relations\/employee-recognition\/university-recognition-awards\/s-a-c-s-larry-atkins-award\/larrty-atkins-award-form\/\">the online nomination form<\/a>&nbsp;by 5pm Friday, September 15<sup>th<\/sup>. &nbsp;If you have questions, please contact&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:dpack@umw.edu?subject=Larry%20Atkins%20Award\">Christy Pack<\/a>.<\/p><p>Winners will be announced at the Fall Employee Luncheon, October 17<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p><p><strong>Staff Advisory Council September Meeting<\/strong>&nbsp;&ndash;&nbsp;The Staff Advisory Council September meeting will be held in the University Center Colonnade Room on the Thursday September 21<sup>st<\/sup> at 1PM.&nbsp; All University staff &nbsp;invited to attend and provide feedback on the strategic vision for UMW that President Paino presented at the assembly last month.&nbsp; We will hold round-table style discussions beginning at 1:30 to gather feedback on each of the four key areas of the vision and the related action steps.&nbsp; Our feedback will be shared with President Paino.&nbsp; The vision will be achieved by concentrating on the four key areas\/goals:<\/p><ul>\n<li>promoting the values of service and social justice<\/li>\n<li>reconstituting the liberal arts for the digital age<\/li>\n<li>immersing our students in applied, impactful learning experiences<\/li>\n<li>creating a diverse and inclusive community as an essential requirement for academic excellence and academic success<\/li>\n<\/ul><p>Hope to see you there!<\/p><p><strong>Faculty\/Staff Welcome at Blood Drive this Friday!&nbsp; <\/strong>The UMW Red Cross Student Organization would love to see more faculty and staff donors at our monthly drives, held in the Hurley Convergence Center&rsquo;s Digital Auditorium. Sign up online at redcrossblood.org\/give with zip code 22401.&nbsp; Please consider donating blood &ndash; you can&rsquo;t live without it!&nbsp; For tips on a successful donation, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donating-blood\/tips-successful-donation.html\">http:\/\/www.redcrossblood.org\/donating-blood\/tips-successful-donation.html<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Stafford County Schools at Stafford Campus &ndash; <\/strong>&nbsp;This fall, the Stafford County Public School system began renting space at the Stafford Campus for their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.staffordschools.net\/Page\/15994\">Alternative Education Program<\/a>.&nbsp;The program will utilizes the first floor offices and classrooms in the Gates Hudson Building.&nbsp;Activity will mostly be during the day between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.&nbsp;UMW staff, faculty and students should be aware that this may affect parking availability during these hours so please plan accordingly.&nbsp;Should you have any questions about the program, you may contact Kevin Caffrey, Stafford Campus Coordinator,&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:kcaffrey@umw.edu\">kcaffrey@umw.edu<\/a>.<\/p><p><strong>University Book Club to meet September 20<sup>th<\/sup>!&nbsp; <\/strong>The University Book Club will meet on Wednesday, Sept. 20, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Bookstore to discuss &ldquo;A Man Called Ove,&rdquo; a New York Times bestseller by Fredrik Backman. Members and visitors are welcome. Contact Margaret Mock, <a href=\"mailto:mmock@umw.edu\">mmock@umw.edu<\/a>, if you have questions.<\/p><p><strong>September Safe Zone Workshops &ndash; <\/strong>The Safe Zone program offers workshops that are designed to educate members of the University community about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) issues to increase the safety and inclusion of all campus citizens.&nbsp; Safe Zone consists of people who will:<\/p><ol>\n<li>Be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQ+ individuals need help, advice or just someone to talk to.<\/li>\n<li>Not tolerate homophobic and heterosexist comments and actions and will address them in an educational and informative manner.<\/li>\n<li>Have received training and can provide information regarding on- or off-campus resources.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>Two types of Safe Zone workshops are offered for faculty and staff. The Basic training focuses on terminology, issues related to privilege,&nbsp;increasing awareness and sensitivity, and how to support the LGBTQ+ population on campus.&nbsp;The Advanced training is for faculty and staff who have already completed the Basic training and covers more advanced topics, including bystander intervention.&nbsp; Enrollment is currently being accepted for a Basic training session for any interested faculty or staff member on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. &nbsp;Advanced training is being offered on Monday, Sept. 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is required and space is limited.
