{"id":137919,"date":"2018-10-29T11:19:37","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T15:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/?p=137919"},"modified":"2018-11-01T12:12:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T16:12:17","slug":"office-sustainability-tip-of-the-week-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/2018\/10\/29\/office-sustainability-tip-of-the-week-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Office Sustainability Tip of the Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanksgiving is only three weeks away, so we\u2019d like to remind all staff and faculty to remember to shut off lights, computers, monitors, printers, copiers, etc. before you leave your offices when the Thanksgiving break officially begins on Wednesday, Nov. 21.\u00a0\u00a0 Also unplug items in your office such as coffee makers, microwaves, radios, etc. since these small appliances often waste energy when plugged in and not in use.<\/p>\n<p>As you begin to think about your Thanksgiving plans, here\u2019s a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thoughtco.com\/top-tips-for-a-green-thanksgiving-1203992\">article<\/a> we found online about how you can have a \u201cgreener\u201d Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Some good tips include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purchasing only as much food as you need<\/li>\n<li>Choosing products that come in packaging that can be recycled<\/li>\n<li>Buying locally grown food to support the local economy<\/li>\n<li>Choosing organic food since it is produced without antibiotics and artificial hormones<\/li>\n<li>Consider staying home vs. traveling.\u00a0 If you do choose to travel, the article provides great advice on how to use less fuel and lower your emissions when making that long road trip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know you may not be thinking about holiday shopping yet, but Saturday, Nov. 24 is Small Business Saturday.\u00a0 Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to support their local economy by patronizing brick and mortar businesses in your community.\u00a0 Consider if items you plan on buying this holiday season can be purchased from locally owned \u201cmom &amp;
