Violet\u2019s wound was superficial, and she was booked on a charge of attempted murder. Billy recovered, and in a few weeks he was back on the baseball field. Although he refused to sign a complaint, Violet signed a singing contract with a local burlesque theater, billing herself as Violet Valli, \u201cThe Girl Who Shot for Love.\u201d Preceding her on stage were the theater\u2019s \u201cBare Cub Girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Violet_nightclub.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146024 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Violet_nightclub-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"Violet Valli ad\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Violet_nightclub-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/06\/Violet_nightclub.jpg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The photographs and detailed narrative are based on Bales\u2019 research and his award-winning article, \u201cThe Show Girl and the Shortstop: The Strange Saga of Violet Popovich and Her Shooting of Cub Billy Jurges\u201d (<em>Baseball Research Journal<\/em>, fall 2016). \u201cIt\u2019s an incredible story,\u201d Bales said in a recent interview. \u201cWe\u2019re talking attempted murder, stolen love letters, blackmail, a burlesque show, sex, and, of course, baseball.
