Funds often don\u2019t hit accounts until a few weeks into the semester, so students can\u2019t purchase textbooks, and they risk falling behind.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90313\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90313\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Melissa Wells, an assistant professor in UMW\u2019s College of Education (COE), knows this scenario all too well. That\u2019s why she\u2019s designing an Open Education Resources (OER) textbook for her Foundations in Education course, thanks to a $10,000 grant from VIVA \u2013 Virtual Library of Virginia \u2013 a consortium of nonprofit academic libraries within the Commonwealth. News of the grant comes as educators nationwide celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openeducationweek.org\/\">Open Education Week<\/a>, March 2 to 6.<\/p>\n<p>As the cost of textbooks rises, so does the importance of providing access to personalized learning materials meant for diverse audiences.
