But after her first costume design course, she realized theatre was the perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so interesting to me that I changed my major,\u201d said Austin, who planned to study psychology but found elements of that in her new field. \u201cI discovered that costuming could be a visual language to express each character\u2019s personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now she\u2019s putting those sartorial skills to work. After earning a bachelor\u2019s degree in theatre from Mary Washington, Austin completed an MFA at Yale University. Graduating just before COVID shuttered Broadway, she made a leap from stage to screen, joining design teams for remakes of HBO\u2019s <em>Sex and the City<\/em> and Steven Spielberg\u2019s <em>West Side Story<\/em>, as well as the Hulu hit <em>Only Murders in the Building<\/em>, which just began its second season.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a success story she\u2019s been stitching together a little at a time. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/2022\/08\/04\/theatre-alum-creates-costumes-for-hit-shows-on-hulu-hbo\/\">Read more.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alicia Austin \u201916 had never even attended a play before coming to the University of Mary Washington.
