{"id":89931,"date":"2014-05-06T22:52:23","date_gmt":"2014-05-07T02:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/umweagleeye.wpengine.com\/?p=89931"},"modified":"2014-05-07T09:01:04","modified_gmt":"2014-05-07T13:01:04","slug":"jim-groom-talks-umw-domains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/2014\/05\/06\/jim-groom-talks-umw-domains\/","title":{"rendered":"Jim Groom Talks UMW Domains"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p>Since early March of 2014 Jim Groom has delivered numerous invited presentations about the work the <a href=\"http:\/\/academics.umw.edu\/dtlt\">Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies<\/a> (DTLT) has been doing with <a href=\"http:\/\/umwdomains.com\">Domain of One&rsquo;s Own<\/a>.<\/p><p>On March 6 Groom delivered a <a href=\"http:\/\/dml2014.dmlhub.net\/live\/featured-session-1\/\">featured session<\/a> at the 2014 Digital Media Learning Conference in Boston, Mass. focused around the theme of Connected Practices. The presentation was titled &ldquo;Domain of One&rsquo;s Own: Notes from the Trailing Edge,&rdquo; and it delves into the question of why higher ed has turned its back on the web for teaching and learning, an invention it in many ways made possible. <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/how-the-web-was-ghettoized-for-teaching-and-learning-in-higher-ed\/\">Here&rsquo;s an extended post framing the thinking behind this presentation<\/a>, and there is also an archived&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6m90BzVVPG4&amp;feature=share&amp;t=34m12s\">video of this presentation<\/a> below (the Domain of One&rsquo;s Own discussion starts at minute 32:00).<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6m90BzVVPG4\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p><p>On <strong>March 14<\/strong> Groom was invited to deliver the keynote presentation at <a href=\"http:\/\/2014umwedtechconference.umwblogs.org\/\">UMW&rsquo;s 4th annual EdTech Conference<\/a> titled &ldquo;Reclaim Learning: A Domain of One&rsquo;s Own.&rdquo; This presentation examined a decade&rsquo;s worth of experimentation and development at the University of Mary Washington that has resulted in a series of innovative projects such as <a href=\"http:\/\/umwblogs.org\">UMW Blogs<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ds106.us\">ds106<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/umwdomains.com\">Domain of One&rsquo;s Own<\/a>. The presentation examined the common denominator of these edtech projects: they operate from a shared ethos of supporting an open environment for teaching and learning online by helping faculty and students alike exert control over the digital spaces they learn, teach, and live in.<\/p><p>On <strong>March 28<\/strong> Groom was invited to keynote the Baruch College&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baruch.cuny.edu\/teachtech\/program.htm\">17th Annual Teaching and Technology Conference<\/a>. The presentation was titled &ldquo;Domain in the Afterglow Or, What we Can Learn about Digital Identity from Geocities&rdquo; and it explored the development of web publishing at universities during the mid-90s as well as the emergence of one of the earlier social media sites: Geocities. The presentation explores how higher ed turned away from the open web as platform at the turn of the millennium in exchange for coherence, security, and ease-of-use, the issue remains what was lost in that sacrifice. You can see the slide below and read more about the pesentation on Jim Groom&rsquo;s blog <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/teaching-technology-in-the-afterglow-at-baruch-college\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/12KGJqYy3D-Txoq8Fz5Iu9Bv2OzNXWeWJS49BoeM19Pc\/embed?start=false&amp;loop=false&amp;delayms=3000\" height=\"369\" width=\"660\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p><p>On <strong>April 10<\/strong> Groom delivered the keynote presentation at the <a href=\"http:\/\/sloanconsortium.org\/conference\/2014\/et4online\/welcome\">Sloan-C Emerging Technologies Conference<\/a>&nbsp;titled &ldquo;Domains in the Afterglow&rdquo; that was a further tightening of the talk delivered at Baruch College almost two weeks earlier. &nbsp;The focal point being how can universities more broadly support an infrastructure beyond the learning management system that enables digital literacy and&nbsp;creates a student-centric technology ecosystem.&nbsp;Below is a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/events.mediasite.com\/Mediasite\/Play\/141448bc55bd4b39b23ed582e3788bc81d\">video of the talk<\/a>, and here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/SloanConsortium\/et4online-keynote-jim-groom-on-reclaiming-learnin?utm_source=embed_header\">trail of the Twitter conversation that resulted from this presentation<\/a>. You can read more about this presentation on Jim Groom&rsquo;s blog <a href=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/trojan-horses-in-the-afterglow-at-sloan-c\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/events.mediasite.com\/Mediasite\/Play\/141448bc55bd4b39b23ed582e3788bc81d\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sloan-C Keynote Talk\" src=\"http:\/\/bavatuesdays.com\/files\/2014\/04\/Screen-Shot-2014-04-10-at-5.24.08-PM-1024x645.png\" width=\"640\" height=\"403\"><\/a><\/p><p>More recently, on <strong>April 26 and 27<\/strong> Jim Groom was invited down to Emory University, along with Tim Owens and Martha Burtis, to discuss Domain of One&rsquo;s Own with representatives from various colleges in the Atlanta region at the <a href=\"http:\/\/ewprogram.com\/incubator\/\">Domain Incubator<\/a>. This was a conference inspired by the work happening at UMW, and the two-day intensive program was dedicated to sharing the work UMW and Emory (who is running a pilot of Domains this year) have been doing over the last year. The keynote presentation Groom delivered was titled &ldquo;Domain of One&rsquo;s Own: a Problem of Coherence&rdquo; and you can see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6F9P-d_h5Gs\">the video<\/a> below.
