{"id":97101,"date":"2014-07-21T16:07:15","date_gmt":"2014-07-21T20:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/?p=79271"},"modified":"2014-07-22T08:23:14","modified_gmt":"2014-07-22T12:23:14","slug":"communication-journal-honors-umw-political-science-professor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webarchive.umw.edu\/eagleeye\/2014\/07\/21\/communication-journal-honors-umw-political-science-professor\/","title":{"rendered":"Communication Journal Honors UMW Political Science Professor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/faculty\/faculty-member\/cmurphy3\/\">Chad Murphy<\/a>, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Mary Washington, was recently announced as the recipient of article of the year for 2014 by Communication Methods and Measures journal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_79281\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/chad-murphy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-79281 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.umw.edu\/news\/files\/2014\/07\/chad-murphy-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Second from left is Chad Murphy, assistant professor of Political Science. \" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chad Murphy (second from left), assistant professor of Political Science, was announced as the recipient of article of the year for 2014 by Communication Methods and Measures journal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Murphy, along with Associate Professor of Psychology Chris Westbury at the University of Alberta, published \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.academia.edu\/4248936\/Expanding_the_Scope_of_Selective_Exposure\">Expanding the scope of selective exposure: An objective approach to measurement of media ideology<\/a>\u201d in August 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe paper does an excellent job describing the methodological limitations of current approaches to selective exposure (i.e., blunt coding, assumption of neutrality, artificial unidimensionality),\u201d said members of the committee who selected the winners. \u201cFurther, the cognitive psychology focus on word co-occurrence is interesting and innovative to selective exposure research.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winning paper was selected in a two-step process. Editors of the Communication Methods and Measures journal narrowed down the list of articles before members of an executive board serving on a special committee identified the winners.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy and Westbury will be awarded during an annual conference in Montreal, Canada.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chad Murphy, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Mary Washington, was recently announced as the recipient of article of the year for 2014 by Communication Methods and Measures journal.
