On the Democratic side, the current field is at a historically large 17 candidates, with two late entrants joining the field in recent weeks. While former Vice President Joe Biden has been the frontrunner for most of the year, the popularity of Senator Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Pete Buttigieg show that there are cracks in his lead, which may continue grow in the lead-up to the Democratic convention.”

Larus Comments on Hong Kong Protests and Taiwan Election

Professor of Political Science and International Affairs Elizabeth Freund Larus spoke to the South China Morning Post in an article on how the Hong Kong protests are impacting the Taiwanese elections. Larus said “that in most polls Tsai had a significant lead over Han, bolstered by young voters who supported the Hong Kong protesters. ‘The Tsai camp clearly has momentum, while Han appears to be stuck looking for the right message, which is much too late in the campaign cycle,’ she said.” Read more.

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, offered a National Security Lecture on China’s New Silk Road to JWACS engineers at the UMW Dahlgren campus on October 23. Dr. Larus claimed that China is building the New Silk Road to expand its commercial and political influence and to have a more prominent status and role in global affairs. Some observers of the project see it as an effort to remake the global balance of power, and as the costs of many of the proposed projects have skyrocketed, opposition has grown in some participant countries.

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, indicated October 9 on CNBC Asia Squawk Box that unrest in Hong Kong has given Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen a boost in her reelection bid. Dr. Larus claimed that the Hong Kong protests have widened the race between the incumbent Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive party (DPP) and the Nationalist Party’s (KMT) candidate and mayor of Kaohsiung city Han Kuo-yu. Larus predicted that Tsai is likely to win re-election in the January 2020 race, and that China-Taiwan relations would continue to be chilly well into Tsai’s second term.

Indus News is an English language Pakistani international news channel. Professor Larus indicated that she did not foresee any breakthroughs in the talks that week in Washington. She indicated that expectations for any agreement on trade were low because Beijing is unwilling to accommodate U.S. demands for structural changes to China’s economic development strategy. She also indicated that the heart of the matter isn’t closing the trade gap but a race for technological supremacy. Whoever controls 5G will be the next world leader.

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, participated in the Roundtable “Current Events in Cross-Strait Relations” at the 2019 Meeting of the American Association of Chinese Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle, October 4-5. Professor Larus commented on cross-Strait relations as a factor in Taiwan’s 2020 elections.
Larus Comments in Portuguese Press on Hong Kong Protests and Taiwan Politics

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, commented on the effect of the Hong Kong protests on the 2020 Taiwan presidential elections. Professor Larus indicated that the “one country, two systems” formula applied to Hong Kong after 1997 was never a popular concept in Taiwan. China originally offered the formula to Taiwan in the 1980s as an incentive to join the mainland. She indicated that it would be political suicide for the Taiwan government, whether it be DPP or KMT, to support it in Taiwan now. She indicated that the response by the HK government to protests against a proposed extradition law there killed any chances of Taiwan accepting the “one country, two systems” formula. Dr. Larus also indicated that the HK protests and the HK government’s response has forced Kaohsiung mayor and KMT presidential candidate to step away from his earlier advocacy of “one country, two systems” and to be more cautious in advocating closer relations with China. She indicated that a crackdown on protesters in HK could also change the political dynamics on Taiwan.
