Mary Talks: The Chinese Dream and the New Silk Road

Dr. Elizabeth Larus, professor of political science and international affairs and a 2019 Fulbright recipient, will present “The Chinese Dream and the New Silk Road.” The Chinese Dream is Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s goal of national rejuvenation with the aim of restoring China to its historical place as a great power. To help meet this goal, China is building a New Silk Road to expand its commercial and political influence and to have a more prominent status and role in global affairs. Some analysts see the project as an effort to remake the global balance of power, and as the costs of the proposed project have skyrocketed, opposition has grown in some participant countries. |

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, commented on the upcoming G20 meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in VnExpress, the most read newspaper in Vietnam. Professor Larus projected that there would be no major breakthrough in the U.S.-China trade war at the G20 meeting. Political Science Professor Elizabeth Larus
Professor of Political Science and International Affairs Elizabeth Larus, an expert on the politics of China, was recently interviewed on Fortune.com for an article titled “The U.S. May Have Snubbed a Critical Dealmaker in China Trade Talks.” In the article, she discusses how trade deals differ in China from the U.S.
According to the article, “In China, the situation is almost entirely flipped, with high-level control making use of focused experts. ‘The Chinese communist party has what’s called leading small groups—LSGs—for all important policy matters,’ Larus said. ‘Xi Jinping is the leader of most of these leading small groups.’ Xi also happens to be the president of the PRC and the general secretary of the Communist Party of China.”

Larus Receives Waple Achievement Award
Political Science Professor Elizabeth Larus
University of Mary Washington Professor of Political Science Elizabeth Larus was named the recipient of 2019’s Waple Faculty Professional Achievement Award at a general faculty meeting on Wednesday, April 24.
Established in honor of Shirley Van Epps Waple, a 1952 Mary Washington graduate, the nomination-based award recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions to their scholarly or creative area of expertise. The recipient must be a full-time faculty member for at least seven years.
Since coming to UMW in 1997, Larus has distinguished herself as an international expert in the politics of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and political science students at Mary Washington are eager to learn from her scholarly endeavors, which include three years conducting field research in Asia.
